Intangibles are the New Perfect SAT Score
Intangibles are the New Perfect SAT Score The following is a guest post written by Application Authority, a college application branding company that helps students differentiate themselves from thousands of other applicants. A perfect SAT score has been considered the Holy Grail of college admissions for years. And for good reasonthe SAT and the ACT have been used for decades by schools to predict candidates potential for higher education success independent of other accomplishments. But if you have been losing sleep over achieving the ideal 1600 or 36-point score, we suggest you get some rest and consider changing your focus. These tests are flawed The ACT and the SAT are flawed. To adapt to the tests flaws, schools have shifted from a point-based application process to holistic review, thus diminishing the value of this traditionally highly weighted criteria. Additionally, with an increase in average college applicant GPA and grade inflation in recent years, admissions officers have shifted their attention to learning more about the applicant through essays. [RELATED: How to Survive the College Application Process, Part One] The secret to admission With top schools rejecting perfect test scorers each year, what is the secret to getting admitted to an elite college or university? Would you like the good news or the bad news first? We like to lead with the positive, so here goes: You are the secret to admission. The bad news? Theres no easy fix. After all, you cant attend a class, take a few practice exams, and voila, magically have a great perceived version of You. When reviewing applications, admissions officers are thinking about a few things: Who is this student? What will he/she contribute to our community? Will he/she be a good fit at this school? What will he/she accomplish while at our school and beyond? You might be thinking that you would rather work for that 1600 or 36 than try to decode what this means. Or youre thinking, Okay, I get it. I need to start my own business or something. Unless you are actually passionate about doing so, it probably means doing none of the above. Schools want to know who you are as a person. Not just as a student. What makes you tick, and how do you choose to pursue your interests? It really is that simple. [RELATED: 3 Questions to Ask Your Guidance Counselor About College] Share your passion Think about your best qualities, and then think about how you can apply them to contribute in some way, shape, or form. What have you done to move the ball forward or to move the needle? Lets take John (a real student), for example. John is incredibly passionate about space and thinks Elon Musk is amazing. John looks at his school directory and discovers that his school doesnt have a space club. So, he pokes around his community and discovers a small notice in his local newspaper: Interested in star gazing? Join us. He goes to the event and enjoys the community feel. He decides to start a space club at his school. He has no idea what hes doing, but hes driven and passionate, and he figures it out. From there, he builds on the idea and creates a space mentorship program with a local elementary school. Now John is happily attending a top-three school. Johns best qualities are his drive, ability to motivate others, and ability to build relationships. He used his passion for space as a foundation for applying his best attributes to make the community a better place. And just like that, John has shown admissions officers who he uniquely is. This is far more valuable than any perfect test score. [RELATED: What Does It Mean to Be a Well-Rounded Student?] What can you do? Alright, lets get to you. What can you do to figure out who you are? Freshman/sophomore: Write down a list of things that interest you. Research and write down current, relevant opportunities to get involved within your school and community. Brainstorm these ideas with a parent or teacher or mentor and pick a couple to try. If they dont work out, thats okay. Try something else. Junior/senior: Now is the time to take on a leadership role within your activities. This role can be formal or informal as long as you are using your best qualities to make a difference. The only thing leftessays It will also be important to create a stellar application that highlights your best and unique attributes. Show each school why you will be an unrivaled contributor, classmate, and community member. While test scores and GPA will likely forever be relevant for college admissions, essays are an extremely important way to position yourself as a uniquely qualified candidate. After all, you are more than just a number. The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.

4 Tips For Maximizing the Lifespan of Your Acoustic Guitar
4 Tips For Maximizing the Lifespan of Your Acoustic Guitar Suzy S. Whether your acoustic guitar is brand new or gently used, you can do a few simple things to keep it in great condition! Follow these tips from guitar teacher Samuel B. to get the most out of your acoustic guitar Lets face it. Acoustic guitars can be an outright nuisance to keep in shape. Theyre delicate, sensitive to both humidity and temperature patterns, and often have weak central support. While the desire to keep yours both easily accessible and on display in a stand or on a rack is more than understandable, doing so increases its vulnerability. A few simple storage and maintenance provisions will prolong its shelf life and reduce (if not altogether eliminate) the need for repairs. 1. Keep it in the case when youre not playing. Although I recommend a hard shell case, any padded one will do just fine. The trick here is to keep your instrument out of the open air while youre not playing it. An unpadded soft shell case will not be much help here. Find a trustworthy robust alternative to protect your instrument. 2. Be sure your strings are the proper gauge. Installing over-sized strings is a very easy way of creating otherwise avoidable bends in the neck. My experience has been that most acoustic guitars (at the least the ones Ive played â" Takamines and Martins) are light gauge friendly. Some of the more robust models (such as Guilds for example) rely on a heavier gauge of guitar string for optimal sound. Its best to find out as much information as possible about a models gauge compatibility before purchasing it. If you have questions about the right gauge of string for your guitar, talk to your guitar teacher or chat with an expert at a local guitar shop. 3. Keep the truss rod tight. The truss rod is the thin metal shaft aligned with (and within) the neck adjustable with an allen wrench. âLefty loosey, righty tightyâ is the relevant mnemonic device. Although Ive heard opinions on both sides of the fence here with regard to whether it should be regularly tightened or regularly loosened, Ive had the best results by checking it for tightness (for resistance to a clockwise turn in other words) in the middle of every string change. If youre not sure your truss rod is at the right level of resistance, you can always have it looked at by a professional. 4. Change strings as infrequently as possible. This may come as a surprise, but a college bandmate brought this to my attention at one point. While its true that professional musicians change strings after every performance, an instrument being used in a mostly non-performance capacity does not need this level of maintenance. As a matter of fact, changing strings too often is actually not good for an instrument that isnt receiving regular full-length concert treatment. Nightly string changes are perfectly appropriate for instruments like Willie Nelsons âTriggerâ, Bruce Springsteens âExcaliburâ, and Neil Youngs âOld Black.â After all, these three are regular conduits of colossal energy and need to be equipped with the appropriate elements to support it. However, an instrument being used for lessons, wood-shedding, or songwriting does not need this attention and actually benefits structurally from having the same set of strings retained for as long as possible. What Makes Employees Quit Their Jobs and How you can Stop It - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / What Makes Employees Quit Their Jobs and How you can Stop It - Introvert Whisperer What Makes Employees Quit Their Jobs and How you can Stop It? Employee retention is one of the biggest challenges being faced by companies globally. 2 in 3 businesses are struggling to fill vacancies and hiring is becoming difficult by the day. Employee turnover is a serious issue and can be extremely expensive for the organization. Did you know that replacing highly trained employees and executives can cost 200% of their annual salary? Moreover, it can take a new employee almost 2 years to reach the level of productivity of an already existing employee. So one can imagine the amount of money, time, and energy this whole process is going to take. Employee turnover happens due to a number of reasons including personal to professional. Well, personal is something that employer cannot do much about, but on the professional grounds, there are a lot of things employers can do to retain their employees. Some of the main reasons why employees quit their jobs are career development, work-life balance, manager behavior, lack of schedule flexibility, unsatisfactory compensation and benefits, relocation, job characteristics, work environment, etc. If an organization wants to retain their employees and thrive rather than be stuck in the cycle of hiring and training a new employee frequently, then the management needs to do its homework. Scheduling one on one meetings with employees, learning if they are happy at workplace or not and if their job is meaningful, asking opinion about how to improve the corporate culture, knowing about their work-life balance, knowing their opinion about flexible work hours, knowing if they lack any technology at the workplace that can help speed up the work, knowing if they are happy with the compensation and benefits, making a notes of all this and starting to implement these will help in employee retention. You can know all about employee turnover and employee retention in the detailed infographic we have provided.
Italian Grammar Mastering the Informal and Formal You
Italian Grammar Mastering the Informal and Formal You Brooke Neuman When it comes to Italian grammar, understanding the informal and formal you can be very difficult. Below, Italian teacher Giulio G. shares some tips and tricks on how master this common Italian grammar conundrum In the Italian language, there are three ways to say you; tu (informal) Lei (formal) and Voi (plural). For beginner Italian students, it can be difficult to determine the correct form when speaking. After all, theres only one you in the English language. Nonetheless, its important that you choose the correct form when conversing with others. This is especially important when youre in formal settings; for example, when youre first meeting someone, speaking with an older person, or addressing a person with higher rank or authority. Below is an Italian lesson on mastering the informal and formal you: Tu (Informal) Typically, tu is used in everyday conversation. For example, you would use tu when talking to someone your own age or younger. You may also use tu when speaking to someone that you know well, such as a friend or a family member. See examples below: Scusami, sai dovâè la stazione? (You are asking for directions to a person you already know) Claudia, vuoi venire a cena a casa nostra? (Claudia is a friend of yours) Non capisco questo esercizio. Me lo puoi spiegare (You are asking a friend of yours to explain an exercise to you) Lei (Formal) Lei is used in a more formal setting. For example, when a person addresses someone with whom he or she has a professional relationship, such as a colleague or professor. Its also used when a person starts a conversation with someone with whom he or she does not have any previous relationship. See examples below: Mi scusi, sa dovâè la stazione? (You are asking for directions to a complete stranger) Dottor Rossi, vuole venire a cena a casa nostra? (Dottor Rossi can be your boss, an elderly person, or an important figure) Non capisco questo esercizio me lo può spiegare? (You are asking your professor for help) Oftentimes, once you get to know an Italian they will ask you, Possiamo darci del tu?, which means they would like switch to the tu form now that theyre more comfortable with you. Voi (Plural) In the past, voi was often used as a formal way of addressing someone and showing respect; for example government officials or the Pope. Oftentimes, children would use it to address their elders. See examples below: Padre, oggi indossate una così bella cravatta. (Father, you are wearing such a beautiful tie today.) Grandma, are you going to the Mass? (Grandma, are you gong to the Mass?) Vostra eminenza, potreste incontrarmi? Ho bisogno di un consiglio. (Your Eminence, could you meet me? I need advice.) Voi, however, is no longer really used in normal social situations. Nonetheless, its important to be familiar with how to use it just in case. Learning the Italian grammar rules for the informal and formal you isnt easy. However, working with your Italian teacher and practicing on your own is a good way to master this pesky Italian grammar rule. How Students Can Improve Their Research Skills
How Students Can Improve Their Research Skills If you feel overwhelmed by the thought of completing yet another difficult research paper, there are a few things that can make the process a little easier. Students can improve their research skills by being comfortable asking questions, understanding how to organize information, learning how to find credible sources, and more. Research papers involve a level of examination that can be tricky for any student. Luckily, students have many chances to further develop these skills, as research papers are commonly requested from teachers across all grade levels. Ace your next research paper by following these tips: Improve research skills by asking good questions Once you have your topic selected, you need to ask yourself some questions. Begin by listing what you know about your subject to gauge your existing expertise. Next, ask yourself what you hope to learn through your research, which is often dictated by the assignment. Knowing what sort of information youre looking for can give you some direction as you dive into your project. If there are other requirements for your project, now is a good time to list them out; maybe you need an in-person interview, two scholarly articles, and one book. Get all questions answered now to make sure that your paper or project will be complete. [RELATED: Which Style Guide Should I Use?] You should also write your thesis statement (or a version of what it will become) to provide you direction when youre faced with the wealth of information available to you as a researcher. That way, you can narrow your focus a bit more. Ask your teacher for guidance on this if youd like a second opinion. Improve research skills by thinking carefully about your sources Now that you have a game plan, its time to get to work. As you begin to accumulate information, it is always a good idea to check your source and ask yourself a few questions: Is it outdated? Is it biased? Can you confirm the information provided in at least one other place? If not, your information may be less than ideal. Begin with an internet search for scholarly articles (most web browsers are now smart enough to separate these from less helpful information online). If youre struggling to find good information, a great place to look for additional information is in the source material of another source youve found valuable to your research. While youve probably been told that Wikipedia is an unacceptable source, the sources listed at the bottom could be validand could often be good jumping-off points for source material. You might also think about learning advanced web search techniques, which can help refine your searches by providing you with the tools you need to find optimal keywords, phrasing, etc. in your research. Consult one of the librarians at your school for guidance on this. Improve research skills by organizing your information As you begin to make progress in your information, youll need to keep it organized to make sure each item you collect is unique and relevant. Chances are, youre going to be using the internet for much of your information. Bookmarks and subfolders can be a good way to divide up your information for easy access. If youre someone who likes things directly in front of you, you may consider printing pieces of research you think will be most valuable. In preparation for your paper or project, you should also consider making an outline once you have a few sources. Where is your paper going? That may have changed from your early attempts at a thesis. Consider making a mind-map if youre a visual learner or a more traditional outline (make it on a big piece of paper so you can refer to it easily to guide your research), and identify holes in your information (i.e. places in your argument that may be weak). Improve research skills by seeking out examples If youre struggling during any part of this process, it can be helpful if you ask your teacher to view a sample of past student work. Look at a paper that your teacher felt was a positive example, so you know where the bar is set. Can you identify things the good paper employed during research? Emulate them. [RELATED: The Importance of Writing Skills] Similarly, have a trusted family member or friend review your paper, which can help make your research stronger. Have them consider the following questions as they review: Are you clearly articulating your information or argument? Are there places where youve offered insufficient information? Your reviewers may be able to point them for you. The bottom line when improving research skills It can feel like a challenge to capture such large amounts of information when youre faced with seemingly endless sources, so try not to approach research in such big chunks. By asking good questions, staying organized, using good and varied sources, and utilizing the work and skills of your peers, youll slowly master the research papera skill that will serve you for many years to come. We apparently like the idea of a week-long sojourn into adventure, so weâve adapted their idea of camping to suit our tastes. There are a number of residential camps to be found around the UK where tents and sleep ing bags do feature, along with an inordinate amount of fun and adventure.Weâll look at those camps, first. While not quite this undisciplined, adventure camps do go off the beaten path a bit Image by Nadezhda Zima from PixabayMill on the BrueAlthough sleeping in a tent is an option, at Brue, campers have the option of bunking in a cabin or even a house, albeit still in a dormitory, with others.
